Homeschool Marching Band

Forward from Amber South amber@juhsb.org 404-312-0686:

Hello everyone,

Please read the following information regarding marching band this year. You will see that we have made some changes to make it better for all who want to be involved. Last year, several people said "I thought this was a one week thing..." To accommodate that, we have created two weeks of band camp. The first is a "try it out and see if you like it" week that requires NO further commitment past the first week. The second week is for those who like it, and want to continue. More details are below.

There is a benefit concert being performed in June to help fund our marching band. Because of that, we are going to be able to lower our costs significantly. The cost for the first week of band camp is $50. The goal is to raise enough money at the benefit concert so that the second week of band camp is $50 or less, and there are no further costs. More information will be available in June (as I do not have it yet).

Below is the information from the registration packet. You will find important information and dates listed here.

Band Camp Week 1 and Band Camp Week 2 will be held in Bremen, GA, very near where I-20 meets the GA/AL line. Arrangements can be made for those who live farther away to be hosted locally. Please talk to Amber about this.

The JUHSB marching band is open to homeschool students who play a band instrument, even if they are not in the JUHSB band classes. Students who have one semester of experience on their band instrument are eligible to participate. There is no official age requirement, but please talk to Amber if you are unsure about your child's age in relation to marching band.

There are also positions available in our marching band for pianists and bass guitar players. We We can utilize an unlimited number of pianists in the pit (sideline percussion) to play xylophone, timpani, etc. Each year we need one pianist to play keyboard in the pit. Each year we also need one bass guitar player in the pit. Pianists and bass guitarists should also have a minimum of one semester of experience on their instrument to participate.

We also need an unlimited number of young ladies to participate in our marching band's colorguard – no musical experience required! This is a modest colorguard. No dancing, no tight or revealing outfits. Colorguard is open to young ladies of all ages, but because of physical requirements and the flag height, the minimum age is about 8 years old.

Our marching band has two levels of commitment.

Attend our first week of marching band camp May 23-27, 9am-5pm each day where students learn the fundamentals of marching band. [This is not an overnight camp, but arrangements for hosting students who live farther away can be made. Please talk to Amber about this!]

This is only a one week commitment, where students can "try out" marching band to see what they think. Students attending the first week of band camp are not required to attend anything past this first week of band camp.

This camp will be held at the Bremen Parks and Recreation Department, but not through them. Please only contact Amber about this! For directions to the field, please use this link (the actual address will not work on GPS or online maps)

Attend our second week of marching band camp in July 25-29, 9am-5pm each day, and participate in marching band competitions with the JUHSB marching band. This will be held at the same location as the first week of camp (see above). [This is not an overnight camp, but arrangements for hosting students who live farther away can be made. Please talk to Amber about this!]

The second week of band camp is where we learn our field show that we will later perform at marching band competitions. Our music this year will be the music of John Newton, including Amazing Grace. These competitions are on Saturdays in September and October. Participation in this also requires attendance at a weekly marching band rehearsal on Mondays, every week between the second week of band camp and the last competition.

In order to attend the second week of band camp, a student must have attended the first week of band camp.

Students attending the second week of band camp must commit for the entire marching band season, from the second week of band camp until mid-October when competitions are completed. The field show is dependent upon each member's full participation.

We will attend the Festival of Sound (Ranburne, AL), Bowdon Invitational (Bowdon, GA), and Golden River Marching Festival (Tallapoosa, GA). One more competition could be added to a Saturday in September or October. A final schedule will be posted before the second week of band camp.

Right now, we are only registering for the first week of band camp. The cost is $50 per student, and I must have registration forms and payment in hand no later than Friday, May 20, 2011.

If your child is interested, please contact me for the registration form or if you have any further questions!

[Please note, our website server has been having some technical difficulties and I cannot update it at this time. No current marching band information can be found there for that reason.]

Thanks!

Amber
